Mental Health & Fitness
With Grit
What We Do To Build Mental Strength — Not Just Muscle
At our core, we believe true fitness is both physical and mental. Strength isn’t just built under a barbell — it’s built in the mind, in habits, in healing, and in community. Here’s how we actively support that:
Movement as Medicine
We encourage consistent exercise because movement is one of the most powerful mental health tools available.
-Reduces anxiety and depression
-Improves mood through endorphin release
-Builds confidence and self-worth
-Creates structure, discipline, and purpose
-Helps regulate stress and emotional overload
-Exercise isn’t punishment. It’s therapy in motion.
Sauna + Red Light Therapy Recovery
Recovery is not a luxury — it’s part of mental health.
Sauna benefits:
-Lowers stress and cortisol
-Promotes deep relaxation
-Improves sleep quality
-Supports cardiovascular and brain health
-Creates quiet space to decompress and reset
Red Light Therapy benefits:
-Supports cellular repair and recovery
-Reduces inflammation
-May improve mood and energy regulation
-Helps the body heal — physically and mentally
-Recovery is where the nervous system learns it is safe again.
Coaches Who Actually Listen
Our trainers don’t just count reps — they hear you. They meet you where you are mentally and physically. They support your journey, not just your performance. They help rebuild confidence, discipline, and self-belief. They create accountability without judgment. They understand strength includes struggle. Sometimes the most powerful thing in a gym… is being seen.
Integrated Mental Health Support — A New Era
Now, with a licensed mental health therapist integrated next door to Grit 44, we are bridging the gap between physical and emotional health.
Not separate. Not disconnected. Integrated.
This means:
-Access to professional mental health care within your fitness environment
-Support for stress, trauma, life transitions, and growth
-A place where healing and strength coexist
-Removing stigma around mental health in fitness spaces
-Treating the whole human — not just the body
This is bigger than a gym.
This is a shift in how wellness is approached.
Why This Matters
You can be physically strong and still struggle internally.
You can look healthy and still feel lost.
We are working to change that.
Because real strength is:
-A sound mind
-A resilient body
-A supported community
-And a place where you don’t have to fight alone
Physically fit. Mentally strong. Fully human.

Trevor Frybarger, CSW-PIP; QMHP
I am a Licensed Independent Independent Clinical Social Worker practicing in Rapid City, South Dakota, with licensure in both South Dakota and Minnesota. For more than a decade, I have worked within diverse mental health systems focused on recovery, support, and long-term wellness.
I’m an experienced, relationship-centered therapist with over 10 years in the mental health field, serving individuals navigating recovery, life transitions, and personal growth. My work is grounded in evidence-based practices and shaped by experience across multiple systems of care. I’m passionate about helping people move through difficult seasons and toward the lives they want to build—whether that means healing, redefining goals, or taking their next big step forward. I believe therapy should feel practical, supportive, and empowering—not overwhelming.
